Music video inspiration

To prepare for my NEA, I have decided to select music videos that interest me and have features that I would like to include in my own music video if possible:

1) Drunk Dazed - ENHYPEN

Context: ENHYPEN is a k-pop boy group with a vampiric concept. (The members of ENHYPEN are vampires and are not welcome by the community). At this point in their story, they stay in this mansion luring other teens to a party and assumably die to the vampires as they disappear and all that is left is blood. I like the fact that, within the video, there is a narrative along with a dance and singing performances from the members.

2) Care - Beabadoobee

Context: Beabadoobee is a popular singer known for her confessional, 90s-inspired indie rock and bedroom pop.In this song, Beabadoobee talks about people who offer empty sympathy but fail to understand or truly support her. I like the 'scrapbook-y' style to her video with her using printed images, tape and cut outs which make a unique addition. I also like the style of camera used/ the filters used for this video as it makes the video seem older which is fitting as it it is about people from her childhood.

3) Count to Love - BOYNEXTDOOR

Context: BOYNEXTDOOR is a kpop boy group known for their unique style and boyish charm. In this song the group, BOYNEXTDOOR, act as 'love professionals' and try to help a couple on the edge of breaking up by getting them to communicate and be more mindful of each other. I like the narrative of the song as it shows how communication is key within relationships and how in modern times, romantic (and platonic) relationships become more toxic and/or eventually break up. I want to include a type of modern relationship in my video as I believe my audience will relate to more.

Research and Planning: Pitch and Feedback

Pitch:

This explains the song I chose and what I want to include in my music video and website.

Here's the link to my 30s trial video:

I wanted to create a music video for the song 'Sick' by Dominic Fike, an indie/alternative singer and rapper. Dominic Fike expresses different parts of his life and experiences through his music.

As an avid listener of Dominic Fike's music, and the alternative/indie music genre, I believe I have enough expertise in choosing a good song for my music video and curating an experience for my audience.

What I want to include:
According to the Cosmopolitan, toxic relationships are really taking an all-time high and have become a lot more popular on recent years. Many young people are mistaking intensity for intimacy and ruching through the toxic cycle of love bombing and possessive (and borderline obsessive) behaviours.

I intend to create a narrative and performance style video. In the narrative, I want there to be a couple going through a toxic cycle of arguing, breaking up and getting back together. I want to include this style of relationship in my music video as my target audience will recognise this. I could have a scene with one of my characters reading this article or something similar.

Feedback:
After presenting my ideas to my peers, I received written feedback on my presentation.

After receiving the feedback, I am planning to keep the sunset colour aesthetic which includes the colours: red, yellow, orange, blue, green and purple. I believe that this is a great choice as some peers had given positive feedback about it and that the cycle of the sun going down in the evening and up in the morning connects directly to the cycle of the toxic couple I am including into my narrative. I will also place emphasis into the intertextuality and make sure to include multiple '500 days of summer' references through similar shots and audience positioning. With 'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' I plan to use similar shots.

MUSIC VIDEOS DEVELOPMENT

I have created an infographic on music video development with canva, going through music history and highlighting the turning points of music videos. This directly links to the music videos part of the course and has helped me acquire deeper knowledge of music videos and see how time and technological developments have lead to the point where we are at today.

Shelter advert research

I researched a SHELTER advert to understand SHELTER's ideologies and what they stand for.

https://youtu.be/UDHzRSCcb7A?si=-rFunmQvakFsUUAo

I chose this advert to research because this shows how even children face the effects of homelessness/ struggling to find a place to live, even though they aren't 'supposed' to be involved, they still receive the impact of situations like these. This also highlights 'rogue' landlords and the UK governments lack of response to people like this breaking the law and causing issues for struggling families.

The narrative highlights the emotional toll and frustration of being stuck in temporary accommodation and the lack of sufficient help that is needed. Children are normally seen as dependant and people usually have more sympathy for younger children. Using the perspective of a child in this advert evokes more sympathy from the audience with the addition of the thumbnail of the video being the child wrapped in his mum's arms and looking sorrowful toward the audience, this causes the audience to to feel a sense of altruism and feel the need to help families and others in these kinds of situations leading to pro social behaviour.

Semiology

For Barthes' theory of semiology, I completed further research into Semiology and with my knowledge at the time, made a powerpoint to summarise my findings. Even including examples from real-live industries. Later, I have completed more research into Barthes' five code symphony according to Mark Dixon's book on A level media theory. This includes: Hermeneutic codes, Symbolic codes, Semantic codes, Cultural codes and Proairetic codes and the concept of myths that are symbols so ingrained into society that it has become accepted as 'common knowledge'.

MEDIA MAGAZINE

Media Magazine: 11th issue

in a class of its own
the american teen movie

From this article, I learned that genre isn't fixed and is either created or developed as a result of historical, social, political and economic influences. For example, 'the american teen movie'. This genre / distinct social identity of teenagers wasn't exactly defined before its birth after the 'baby boom' after the Second World War. Many teen movies of this time were based on an outsider (or someone different than the dominant population) to try to fit in then eventually be accepted for their uniqueness. Examples of these movies are Mean Girls, Pretty in Pink and Grease. Genre development also leads to ideas such as hybrid genres, as can be seen in Carrie, where the ending leads to the destruction of their town itself and the murder of the people within it ('high school horror'). However, more recent films 'bend' the stereotypical American high school movie genre rules which can interest the audience as they get to view something unexpected and/or realistic. An example of this is Elephant which was a movie initially made to highlight the Columbine High School massacre but can easily be linked to how teens behave, act and feel in real life. It veered away from the classic narrative structure of previous teen movies and made something, for lack of better words, 'raw' and unfiltered. To summarise, I learned that genres can easily be developed and created by whatever is going on around us and due to the change in attitudes of the audience and events, sub or 'hybrid' genres can be made as a result.

I think this could link to my studies as this concept is linked with Todorov's theory of Narrative Structure as well as Neal's Genre theory.

BEAUTY ADVERT

I chose to engage my target audience with the large, bold font to attract their attention about the features of the mousse. I used pink in the background to not only follow the product’s colour scheme but the use of pink on the can and background follows the stereotypical convention that links pink with femininity. This shows that the product is directly aimed at women.

The female target audience is positioned to see the product as feminine and designed for women. Also, the use of pink, again, encourages the audience to identify with the product that suits their style and beauty needs. This advert reinforces beauty and gender associations that help the target audience quickly understand who the product is for and why it suits them.
